Technical Elements Agent Carter

 Last week in my AICE Media Studies class we took a mock exam for paper 1 and analyse the extract Agent Carter.

In the extract of Agent Carter, she is portrayed not as an equal to her male counterparts. Through the use of following elements camera shots, angels, movement, composition ,sound, mise en scene, and editing.

At the start of the scene there was a flashback of Agent Carter and Steve having a conversation over a device while conducting a mission.

After the flashback there was an eyeline match of Steve where he looks like he is gathering his thoughts as the plane is crashing down then after that the scene flashes out to a year later after the aftermath of the events, where now Agent Carter and her colleagues are in a office.

The scene transitions to where are the agents are moving around conducting assignments, then the scene transition to an over the shoulder shot where Agent Flint approach Agent Carter and ask her about how she is doing, Carter ask Flint when she can get a field work assignment because paperwork seems to be monotonous.

Next is the mise en scene, where the characters are dress professionally, the agents are wearing black suit while the females wear dress. The extract seems to be in the 1970s-60s.

As Agent Carter colleagues go off to work to go for a bite she went to check a message about a mission where it takes her to a location of a dangerous person and the scene transition to her walking where a tracking shot follows her to the location.

Moving on two men approach her explaining that something is wrong with their car as they exchange words Agent Carter throw a punch during the fight the scene use a cutaway to show the guy inside eating, not knowing about the fight that is happening.

Opening Phone Conversation

In one early scene, we see Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) speaking to his daughter, Kim, on the phone, establishing his protective nature and the stakes of their relationship.

Shot/Reverse Shot: The scene alternates between Bryan and Kim as they talk on the phone. This technique allows us to feel the physical distance between them, reinforcing Bryan’s concern as he can't be with her directly. 00:02:15 - 00:03:00  

Eyeline Match: Bryan's gaze shifts to a picture of Kim in his apartment, focusing on his longing and devotion. This eyeline match connects us with his thoughts and feelings, building empathy and emphasizing how much she means to him.  00:04:10 - 00:04:20  

Crosscutting: This technique appears later when the action cuts between Bryan on the phone and Kim being kidnapped. The crosscutting builds suspense and urgency, contrasting Bryan’s desperate attempts to stay calm with the escalating danger Kim faces. 00:19:00 - 00:20:30 

Slow Motion: When Kim is abducted, the editing briefly slows to capture her panicked face as she's pulled away. This use of slow motion heightens the horror and helplessness, allowing us to feel Bryan’s distress.  00:20:15 - 00:20:25  

Dissolve: After the kidnapping, there’s a dissolve into a dark, empty room, signaling the shift from safety to threat. This transition emphasizes that Bryan’s peaceful life has now turned into a nightmare. 00:21:00  

These editing choices build tension and place the audience in Bryan’s perspective. The crosscutting intensifies the urgency, while slow motion emphasizes Kim’s helplessness, pushing us to empathize with Bryan's desperation and need to save her. By combining these techniques, the editing heightens the stakes and sets up the movie’s central conflict: Bryan’s relentless pursuit to protect his daughter at any cost.

 Action Match: In the scene where Bryan urgently packs his belongings after Kim's kidnapping, an action match is used to maintain a sense of continuity as he quickly grabs weapons, phones, and passports. This technique keeps the momentum flowing, showing Bryan's preparation without breaking the intensity of the moment, underscoring his expertise and determination.  00:22:30 - 00:23:10 

Cutaway: During Bryan's investigation, there are moments where the camera cuts away to close-ups of clues he's found (like a map or a specific location on a phone screen). These cutaways help the audience focus on critical pieces of information, guiding us to track his investigation step-by-step and feel like we're piecing the mystery together alongside him. 00:33:15 - 00:33:25

Fade-Out: After Kim’s initial abduction, a fade-out transitions into Bryan’s next steps to find her, symbolizing the end of his peaceful, retired life and the start of a relentless mission. This fade-out emphasizes the gravity of the situation, giving a moment for the audience to absorb the shift in Bryan’s life and to sense the coming intensity. 00:24:00  

Superimposition: When Bryan uses his phone to track Kim's location, there’s a superimposed image of the map on the screen. This visual overlay allows viewers to follow along as Bryan deciphers the clues, creating a sense of immediacy and connection to his thought process. 00:38:10  

Jump Cut: Later in the movie, Bryan's investigation is punctuated with jump cuts as he confronts various suspects quickly. These abrupt cuts convey the speed and ruthlessness of his actions, making it clear that he is willing to do whatever it takes. The disjointed nature of the jump cuts intensifies his anger and determination, driving the pace and keeping the audience on edge. : 00:56:45 - 00:57:15  

How These Techniques Enhance the Story:

Each of these editing techniques enriches our understanding of Bryan's character and the storyline. For example, cutaways matches and jump cuts increase urgency, showing the relentless pace he’s keeping to save his daughter. The fade-out serves as a reflective moment, allowing the audience to register the story’s darker turn and heightening empathy for Bryan's journey. These editing choices help build tension and emotional engagement, ensuring viewers feel Bryan's desperation and resolve as he navigates this high-stakes mission.
